One of the advantages of birds eating the sunflower seeds is that they tend to leave our tomatoes alone. For them, the sunflower heads are close by when they take flight and when the flower petals are yellow they attract bees, our friends. It's like a bird gets filled up on sunflowers and then is not interested in the tomatoes somewhere below.
